Some tests on a computer don't require you to install the browser extension. Instead, you'll set up your recording directly in your browser, so there's no install step to worry about.
This article walks you through what to expect.
In this article:
Before you start
You'll need the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a desktop or laptop computer. Testing without the browser extension isn't supported on Safari, Firefox, or mobile devices. If you open your test in an unsupported browser, you'll be prompted to switch to Chrome or Edge before you can start.

Setting up your recording
Before your test starts, your browser will ask for permission to record.
The required permissions will depend on the test:
Tests that require you to think out loud
You'll need to grant access to your microphone first (plus your webcam, but only if the test requires it), then your screen.
Tests that require you to share your screen only
You'll need to grant screen sharing access only. You don't need to speak during these tests.

The floating task bar
For site navigation and prototype tasks (including Figma), a floating task bar will appear on your screen when the task begins. It shows the task you're working on, and you can move it, resize it, or collapse it to stay out of your way.

During your test
Your recording starts automatically once you grant screen sharing permission and continues until the test ends. Between tasks, you'll return to your test tab to answer follow-up questions and move through the rest of your session.
