Thinking out loud is one of the most powerful ways you can give helpful and honest feedback during a test. When you say your thoughts as they happen, you give real insight—not just into what you're doing, but why you're doing it.
In this guide, you’ll learn what it means to think out loud, why it matters, and how to do it confidently.
Thinking out loud means saying what’s going through your mind as you complete tasks. That includes your thoughts, expectations, questions, and emotional reactions.
You don’t need to describe everything on your screen—just speak naturally about what you’re doing and why.
Try talking like someone’s sitting next to you, and you’re walking them through your experience step-by-step.
Why should I think out loud during a test?
When you think out loud, the people reviewing your feedback can understand your experience more clearly. They don’t just see what you clicked—they hear what you expected, how you felt, and what you were trying to do.
Your voice adds meaning to your actions. It helps others learn:
What you thought would happen
What confused or surprised you
What you liked or didn’t like
What goal you had in mind
How can I practice thinking out loud?
If this feels a little unfamiliar, you're not alone—but it becomes easier with practice!
Try this approach:
Say what you're thinking. Don’t wait for the “perfect” answer—just speak your thoughts as they come.
Talk through your actions. Let people know what you're doing and why.
React in real time. If something surprises or confuses you, say so.
Keep the flow going. If you pause, ask yourself: “What am I trying to figure out right now?”
You don’t need to plan out what you’re going to say ahead of time. Just stay focused on the test instructions and let your thoughts come naturally.
What are some tips for giving great feedback?
If you want to make your feedback even more helpful, try these ideas:
Begin each task by saying what you think it’s asking you to do
Share your first impression before you take action
Say what you expect to happen, then react to what actually happens
Point out anything that’s hard to understand or unclear
Speak honestly—your reactions matter, even if something feels frustrating or awkward
Helpful feedback sounds like:
I expected this button to go to checkout, but it takes me somewhere else.
I’m not sure what to do next—this page feels overwhelming.
This part works really well. It’s clear and easy to use.
Can you show me an example?
Sure! Here’s a short video showing someone thinking out loud while completing a task:
Let’s review!
When you speak your thoughts out loud:
You give feedback that truly makes a difference.
You help others understand what’s working—and what’s not—through your real experience.
Remember: You don’t need to overthink it. Just be yourself, stay curious, and share what’s on your mind.
