When you start a test on your computer, you’ll complete a few setup steps before you begin sharing your feedback. The exact steps depend on the test, but your screen will guide you through everything.

What should I expect?
You’ll share your thoughts out loud while you complete tasks or respond to questions. Some tests will also record your screen, audio, and/or camera, so customers can understand your experience. For example, you might explore a website, complete a task, or answer questions while explaining what you’re thinking.
How do I get started?
This can depend on the type of feedback you're sharing, but you can expect things to go something like this:
- Open your test.
- Follow the instructions on your screen.
- Allow access to your microphone, screen, and/or camera, if prompted.
- Start when you’re ready!
Do I need to install anything?
Sometimes. It depends on your test.
You don’t need to figure this out ahead of time. Before you get started, we'll share instructions so you know exactly what to do.
If you don't need to install anything, you’ll complete steps directly in your browser to:
- Allow access to your microphone
- Share your screen
- Set up camera recording (if required)
Your instructions will stay open in one tab, and you'll share your feedback while using another tab. During the session, you'll switch between tabs as you complete each task.
Sometimes you'll install a browser extension before you begin.
After setting up the extension and starting the session, you’ll see a task widget with instructions for your test. You can expand, collapse, or move the widget as you complete any tasks.
How do I set up my microphone and screen?
Before you can start, your browser will ask for permission to use your microphone, screen, and sometimes your camera.
- Select Allow when prompted
-
Choose the screen you want to share
Select your entire screen. If you’re using multiple monitors, choose the screen where you’ll complete your test.
- Complete the microphone check by speaking out loud so your audio can be verified
- If your test includes face recording, allow access to your camera when prompted
If recording isn’t working, your browser may be blocking access to your microphone, screen, or camera.
Look for a lock icon near your browser’s address bar to review and update permissions.
If you selected Block or closed the permission prompt, you’ll need to allow access before your test can continue.
Use your browser’s guide to update permissions:
- Chrome website permissions guide
- Firefox permissions guide
- Microsoft Edge permissions guide
- Safari website permissions guide
After updating permissions, refresh the page and try again.
What happens during my test?
You’ll read instructions and complete tasks while sharing your thoughts out loud. Depending on the test, you may switch between tabs or windows as you work through each step.
After you finish your test, your recording will upload automatically. Don’t close the upload window until it’s complete.
The experience may look different depending on the type of feedback you're sharing:
- Task based tests – Complete tasks and share your thoughts
- Live Conversations – Meet with a customer in real time
- Surveys – Answer questions without recording
